Why clutter your countertops with appliances, when you can just use one compact multi-cooker? An all-in-one device, the Instant Pot has grabbed the attention of countless food fanatics around the world. Convenient and easy-to-use, it has become one of the hottest kitchen gadgets on the market today. Perfect for busy facilities, the cooker can easily be used to prepare healthy yet delectable meals in a fraction of time.

What does the Instant Pot Do?

A brand of multi-cooker, the Instant Pot was designed to consolidate multiple kitchen appliances into one. Not only can it be used as a slow cooker and a pressure cooker, but it can also steam foods, rice, porridge, and more. Depending on the model, some are even capable of baking cakes, or making yogurt with the press of a button- making food has never been easier!

Though there might be a learning curve for new users, the device is generally easy to operate with its clearly labelled buttons and settings.

The Different Parts of the Instant Pot

As its name implies, the Instant Pot consists of an inner pot, in which you place the ingredients for cooking. Made of food-grade stainless steel, the entire part can be placed safely into the dishwasher.

From there, there’s also the cooker base, heating element, lid, anti-block shield, and sealing ring. Each an important element, the Instant Pot cannot function properly without any of the said components.

How Many Models of Instant Pot Are There?

Since the release of the first Instant Pot, a handful of models have been added to the line. Currently, there are five main versions, these include:

– Instant Pot Lux: The “oldest” model on the market, it functions as a six-in-one (it is not capable of making yogurt)

– Instant Pot Duo/Duo Plus: The most successful model, it serves as a seven-in-one

– Instant Pot Smart: Comes with an app that can be connected to the device via bluetooth

– Instant Pot Gem: More of a slow cooker; is not capable of pressure cooking

– Instant Pot Ultra: The newest edition, it boasts a new “ultra” option that can be used to customize cooking time, and pressure level

As you can probably expect, the newer generations generally come with fancier additions. Having said that, they’re essentially the same in that they all feature the same standard functions (i.e. ability to slow cook, pressure cook, make rice, steam food, etc.). Below, we will be focusing on the newer model, the Instant Pot Ultra.

More About the Instant Pot Ultra

Released in April 2017, the Instant Pot Ultra is the newest model from the renowned company. A significant step-up from its predecessors, it boasts a number of new features- one of which includes a new, vibrant display. Not only is it capable of functions such as making yogurt, but it can also be used for sous-vide cooking, sanitizing, and more. For instance, it comes with a new “Ultra” mode, which allows you to customize the cooking time, temperature level, as well as pressure level.

Highlights:

– Includes a cooking indicator, that lets you know how close your food is to being done

– Includes an altitude adjustment system for those living in higher altitudes

– Comes with a new “Ultra” button for custom programming

– Includes “Sterilize”, “Cake”, and “Egg” programs

– Replaces 10 of the most common kitchen appliances

– Utilizes a central dial system for added precision in adjustment and program selection

Are there any cons for the Instant Pot Ultra?

Considering its differences (especially the new interface), there might be a slight learning curve for those who are used to the previous models. Aside from that, it only comes in one size- 6 quart. If you’re looking for something bigger or smaller, you may have to go back to some of the earlier Instant Pots.

Perhaps the most obvious of all however, is its cost. The newest addition to the Instant Pot lineup, it’s not surprising to know that it currently bares the highest price tag. If you intend on making use of all of its functions however, it’s probably a worthwhile investment.

What is the Fagor Lux?

Now that we’ve gone over the Instant Pot, let’s take a look at another popular brand of multi-cooker, the Fagor Lux.

Available in three sizes, the Fagor Lux is very similar to the Instant Pot in that it is capable of pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice cooking, and making yogurt. Not only that, but it also comes with the abilities to steam, saute, and simmer foods. Complete with 12 preset buttons, the cooker is known for reducing cooking times by up to 70%.

Differences between the Fagor Lux and the Instant Pot Ultra

Despite their similarities however, there are a number of differences that set the two brands of multi-cookers apart. Let’s take a look at them below.

– The Fagor Lux’s delay timer goes up to 6 hours, where as the Instant Pot Ultra is capable of going up to 24 hours

– The Instant Pot Ultra’s interface is generally much more easy to use than that of the Fagor Lux

– The Fagor Lux uses 1300 watts while the Instant Pot Ultra uses 1000 watts

– The Fagor Lux comes with a 10 year warranty, while the Instant Pot Ultra comes with a 1 year warranty

– The Instant Pot Ultra is more noticeably more expensive than the Fagor Lux

– The Fagor Lux’s cooking pot is made of a ceramic (nonstick), while the Instant Pot Ultra’s is made of food-grade stainless steel

– The Fagor Lux has a few extra safety features, these include a locking lid and automated pressure release

Fagor Lux Vs. Instant Pot Ultra: Strengths and Weaknesses

Fagor Lux Strengths:

– Features a ceramic nonstick pot that is tougher than traditional coatings

– Some users have reported that the Fagor Lux takes less time to heat up

– Comes in a variety of colours (e.g. silver, copper, white, champagne)

– Comes with added safety features one of which includes an automatic pressure valve

– Manual is clear, thorough, and easy to understand

– Cooking pot is dishwasher safe

– Replacement gaskets can easily be purchased on Amazon

Fagor Lux Weaknesses:

– Slight learning curve for new users

– Some models of the Fagor Lux can be more expensive

– Can easily be moved accidentally due to being lightweight

– The handle does not come with a lid holder

Instant Pot Ultra Strengths:

– Sleek and modern design that is easy to use with a pushable dial

– Comes with a customizable temperature setting

– Reliable product

– Features one of the best management systems as far as electric pressure cookers go

– Uses less electricity (i.e. 1000 watts)

Instant Pot Ultra Weaknesses:

– Does not come with a non-stick inner pot

– Only available in one color

– The most expensive model of Instant Pot on the market

– Does not come with an automatic pressure valve

Should I Get a Fagor Lux or an Instant Pot Ultra?

Ultimately, this depends on what you’re looking for. For instance, if you’re interested in preset programs and an easier-to-use interface by one of the bestselling brands of multi-cookers, the Instant Pot Ultra might be a good option.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something with a non-stick pot, you probably want to go for the Fagor Lux.

At the end of the day however, no matter which device you’ve chosen, you’ll still be able to prepare the same meals more or less. If anything, you might want to take into consideration their different warranties; while the Instant Pot Ultra comes with one year of warranty, the Fagor Lux multi-cooker guaranteed for ten years (given that you’ve properly registered the multi-cooker).

Where can I Purchase a Fagor Lux or an Instant Pot Ultra?

As you can probably expect, both the Fagor Lux and the Instant Pot Ultra can be found on Amazon. If you’re not in a rush to purchase the cooker, you may wish to wait for their next sale as the web giant tends to discount their kitchen appliances from time to time.

We also recommend this scrub brush set on Amazon.com if you are already there!

Of course, you can also purchase the multi-cookers in a number of retail stores.

Perfect for busy families, the Instant Pot is an excellent choice for those wishing to prepare healthy, yet delicious meals. One of the most popular brands of multi-cookers, its versatility has earned it a cult following over the past couple of years. Not only does it speed up cooking process by up to 10x, but it also uses ~70% less energy.

Fitted with smart technology, one can easily prepare food with the press of a button. Marketed as a seven-in-one, it is capable of performing multiple functions, such as the ability to cook rice, and make yogurt.

The History of the Instant Pot

Debuted in 2010, the Instant Pot was put together after Robert Wang, a former software engineer, found it difficult to prepare healthy meals for his two young children at home. Determined to come up with a solution, he recruited a few partners, with whom he spent the next 18 months working on a prototype of what would eventually become the Instant Pot.

After countless hours of hard work and over $300,000 in investments, they released the first generation of the Instant Pot in 2010. Like most new products however, it took a while for the public to warm up to its existence. With the said, the multi-cooker eventually proved to be a major success; by 2012, the Ontario-based company had become profitable with increased revenue every year.

The Rise of the Instant Pot

In 2016, Amazon also held a promotion, which resulted in over 215,000 units being sold in a single day. Along with word-of-mouth, the Instant Pot quickly developed a cult following. Flash forward to 2018, and the appliance remains to be one of the the best-selling kitchen products on Amazon.

The Different Types of Instant Pot

As you can probably expect from such a popular product, a variety of models are available- each of which are slightly different from one another.

At the time of this writing, there are five main versions, these include the Lux, Smart, Duo, Duo Plus, and Ultra (in order of release). Unsurprisingly, the newer generations tend to have fancier additions compared to their older counterparts. Let’s take a brief look at the different models below.

Instant Pot Lux: The oldest generation still on the available; comes with six different functions

Instant Pot Duo: The most successful model; does everything that the Lux can do, plus the ability to make yogurt

Instant Pot Duo Plus: A refresh of the Duo; comes with a new “sterilize” function

Instant Pot Smart: Comes with an app that can be connected to the cooker via Bluetooth

Instant Pot Ultra: One of the newest additions to the family, it features a new “Ultra” mode, which is similar to its predecessors’ manual and custom modes

On this page, we’ll be focusing our discussion on the Instant Pot Ultra. Is it worth it?

The Instant Pot Ultra

Released in 2017, the Instant Pot Ultra not only comes with a new interface, but it also boasts a new “Ultra” setting (it’s greatest highlight) on the control panel, as mentioned above. Similar to manual and custom mode, it offers you the ability to choose the cooking pressure and time.

What else is new on the Instant Pot Ultra?

– Unlike its predecessors, its modern interface utilizes a spin dial instead of buttons
– It has the ability to cook in sous-vide mode
– Comes with a process indicator which displays the process of the cooking
– Can be adjusted to your altitude

Are there any drawbacks?

– As the newest version, its price tag is noticeably higher than the other Instant Pot models
– There will be learning curve, especially if you’re used to the previous models
– Only comes in one size, 6 quart

Is the Instant Pot Ultra Worth It?

So, is it worth it? That depends. If you already own an earlier model, you probably don’t need the upgrade, per se. With that said, if you don’t mind its price tag, and are looking to purchase a newer version, its new functions (e.g. sous-vide mode, etc.) does make it an attractive product.

On Amazon, the Instant Pot Ultra can be purchased for $129.99+, depending on the size.

What is an Instant Pot? To put it simply, it’s a multi-purpose cooker that is capable of performing a number of functions such as steaming, sauteing, and pressure cooking. Incredibly popular in the recent years, most users rave about the same thing- its versatility. Whether you’re trying to prepare soup or cook rice, all you need is the one cooker. In fact, its numerous functions allow it to replace individual kitchen appliances (e.g. steamer, rice cooker, pressure cooker, etc.). Why have ten different cookers, when you can have an all-in-one?

Like most electronics, however, there are a variety of different models to choose from. If anything, the choices available have only grown greater over the past couple of years. While they all differ in miniscualities however, the underlying purpose is the same- to serve as a programmable, multi-purpose cooker. Below, we’ll be discussing the different Instant Pot models. Which ones are 6-in-1? 7-in-1? Which one should you buy? Hopefully, we’ll be able to answer these questions for you down below.

The Different Instant Pot Models

As of 2018, there are currently five main models of Instant Pots; these include:

The Lux: The second Instant Pot to be released, it currently serves as the “economy” option. Unlike some of the newer models (which we’ll be going over below), it does not have the “Yogurt” function*, nor is it capable of cooking on a “low pressure” setting. Because of this, the Lux is a 6-in-1.

* While it doesn’t have the “Yogurt” function, you can easily still make Yogurt with the Lux- you’ll just have to use a different method

The Duo: Perhaps the most popular model, the Duo boasts all seven functions (pressure cook, steam, saute, slow cook, keep warm, cook rice, make yogurt). Another big plus is the fact that it comes with two pressure settings- both high and low. As a minor addition, it also features a spot for you to rest the lid near the handles, so that you do not need to put it down on the countertop. The Duo is a 7-in-1.

Note: The 3 quart size is only available with the Duo model

The Smart: As its name implies, the Smart model boasts a number of additional functions compared to the ones mentioned previously. Not only is it capable of performing everything that the Duo and Lux can, but it also has a programmable app that can be used to connect to the Instant Pot via Bluetooth. On top of that, it also comes with a much, larger, more informative screen on the front.

With the Smart Instant Pot app, you can easily use recipe scripts which are incredibly handy when it comes to making quick, easy meals. The Smart can be considered a 7-in-1.

The Ultra: One of the newer models, the Ultra features a central dial which allows for added precision when it comes to adjustment or program selection. Not only that, but it also comes with a steam release reset button, a cooking indicator, an altitude adjustment- as well as an entirely new interface. Needless to say, it does everything that the previous models are capable of doing. The Ultra can be considered a 7-in-1 (though in reality, it’s more of a 10-in-1).

The Gem: The newest addition, the Gem can be regarded as being entirely different than its predecessors. Unlike the other models, it is not capable of doing any pressure cooking. With that said, it is still considered to be a multi-cooker (though referring to it as a “fancy slow cooker” may be more accurate). The Gem is able to stew, roast, steam, cook rice, slow cook, sauce, and bake. It does not make yogurt. If anything, the Gem is considered to be below a 6-in-1.

Should I get an Instant 6 in 1 or 7 in 1?

If you’re deciding between a 6-in-1 and a 7-in-1, ask yourself- what will you be using the Instant Pot for? Before deciding on a cooker, it’s recommended to read about the differences above; from there, you can determine which model better suits your need.

For instance, if you never plan on making yogurt in an Instant Pot, there really is no reason to shell out extra money for a 7-in-1. On the other hand, if you’re planning on making the decision by the size of the cooker, remember that the Duo (aka 7-in-1) is the only one that is available as a 3 quart.

One of the oldest cereal grains in the world, rice has been consumed as a staple food for thousands of years. Particularly popular in Southern and Eastern Asia, its popularity has also been growing in the Western countries due to its versatility, and health benefits in the recent years. Though there have been many debates on its true origin, there is evidence to believe that all forms of Asian rice comes from a certain domestication up to 13,000 years ago in China.

Before we go on to talk about the differences between an Instant Pot and a Rice Cooker, let’s go over some basic facts about rice.

What is Rice?

A cereal grain, rice is the seed of various grass species. Depending on the exact species, rice can exhibit a variety of tastes, textures, and nutritional value.

Typically grown in Asia, rice is usually planted in a flat field with lots of water; in fact, this process is often referred to as “flooding.” Prior to cropping, the water is drained. From there, farmers are able to harvest and mill the crop; next, it goes through various milling processes.

The Different Types of Rice

As mentioned earlier, there are many different types for rice, depending on its grass species. Generally, the cereal grain can be classified into three groups according to size; we’ve listed them below.

Long Grain Rice: As its name implies, it’s roughly four times longer than it is wide. This type of rice includes Basmati rice, Jasmine rice, and American white and brown rices. Known for its firm and dry texture as grains, it typically stays separate and fluffy after being cooked.

Medium Grain Rice: True to its name, it is shorter and wider than its long-grain counterpart. Tender and moist, the grains generally stick together once its cooked. Some typical medium grain rices include Valencia, and Arborio (often used in dishes such as risotto).

Short Grain Rice: Named for its short length, short grain rice is almost as long as it is wide. Plump in appearance, it generally ends up being tender and soft after being cooked. The most common type of short grained rice is sushi rice.

Aside from size, the staple ingredient can also be categorized based on its color.

White rice: White in appearance, white rice has its germ, bran layer, and husk removed. As a result, it generally contains less nutrients than its red, black, or brown counterparts. For one thing, it has very little fibre due to the absence of the husk. Examples of white rice include: Basmati, Doongara, and Jasmine rice.

Brown rice: In contrast to white rice, which has its germ and bran layer removed in the milling process, brown rice is whole grain, that is, only the outer hull has been removed. Chewier with a “nutty” flavour, it is generally more nutritious with 3.2 grams of fiber per 100 gram.

Black Rice: Earthy, with a distinct nutty flavour, black rice takes much longer to cook than the previous two rices. Known for its lower glycemic index, it releases its sugars “slowly” in the body, which keeps you fuller for a longer period of time. Incredibly nutritious, it contains 9.1 grams of protein per 100 grams.

Red Rice: Known for its reddish-brown hue, red rice boasts a variety of antioxidants. Available both hulled or unhulled, it contains 7 grams of protein per 100 grams.

Health Benefits of Rice

As one of the most widely consumed staple foods in the world, it’s not surprising to know that rice has a number of health benefits. Not only does it provide essentials vitamins such as B1 to the human body, but some studies have also shown it to be beneficial in metabolism, and digestion. Below, we’ll be going over some of the health benefits of rice.

Rice is a Great Source of Energy

Due to the fact that it is a carbohydrate, rice is capable of acting as fuel for the body. The way it works, is that these carbohydrates are metabolized into expendable, functional energy by the body. The different vitamins and minerals contained in rice also further increases energy level.

Rice can be Used to Prevent Obesity

Rice does not contain any sodium, cholesterol, or harmful fats on its own; this means that it has the potential of being an integral part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Rice can be Used to Help Control Hypertension

Incredibly low in sodium on its own, rice is usually considered a safe option for those experiencing hypertension. This is due to the fact that sodium is the prime agent responsible in causing arteries and veins to constrict (which subsequently increases blood pressure).

Rice can be Beneficial in Skincare

According to some studies, powdered rice has been shown to be beneficial when used topically on the skin. For instance, some species of wild or brown rice is said to have phenolic compounds, which boast anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to that, antioxidants present may also delay the appearance of aging and wrinkles.

Rice can Help to Improve Metabolism

The vitamins and minerals (e.g. calcium vitamin D niacin, iron, riboflavin, etc) present in rice helps to boost the body’s metabolism, as many are necessary for the body’s organic processes.

Rice can be used to Prevent Anemia

Due to the fact that it contains iron, rice can be helpful in the formation of hemoglobin, which is essential for transporting oxygen in the blood.

Rice is easy to digest

Easy to digest, especially when made into a porridge, rice is typically a good option for those who are recovering from being sick.

How Do You Cook Rice?

Rice is fairly simple to make. Ultimately, it just needs to be cooked with water. When cooking rice however, one thing is important to remember- the rice to water ratio. Depending on the type of rice that you’ll be making, you’ll want to add a different amount of water to the grains.

When rice is cooked with liquid (i.e. water), it will expand. Ultimately, this is due to the fact that the granules swell and burst when heated.

In the end, there are many different ways to prepare and cook rice. While some may choose to make it on the stovetop, others prefer to use a dedicated rice cooker for the job. On this page, we’ll be looking at the differences between the Instant Pot and the Rice Cooker.

Using the Instant Pot to Cook Rice

A multi-purpose cooker, the Instant Pot can easily be used to cook rice. In fact, all of the models come with a “Rice” function that makes the entire process even easier. Not only is it capable of cooking white rice to perfection, but it can also be used to make other varieties of rice- all you need to do is adjust the rice to water ratio.

The process is incredibly simple, we will be outlining it briefly below.

1.) Measure the desired amount of rice, and set aside

2.) Add the same amount of water to the inner pot (you’ll want to use a 1:1 rice to water ratio for white rice)

3.) Rinse the dry rice with water, drain the water, and add it to the inner pot

4.) Close and lock the lid, with the steam release valve set to “sealing”

5.) All that’s left is to set it to cook- to do this, simply press the “Rice” button

Tip: The “Rice” button is designed with white rice in mind; if you’re cooking brown rice, you may wish to manually input 20-25 minutes as the cooking time

As you can see, the Instant Pot is extremely handy when it comes to cooking rice.

Using a Rice Cooker to Cook Rice

True to its name, a rice cooker is an automated appliance that is designed to steam or boil rice. Ultimately, it consists of a thermostat, a cooking bowl, and a heat source. Depending on the quality of the cooker, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to cook rice. As it is, most rice cookers are made in Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and China.

Note: Japanese rice cookers tend to be popular for its wide range of functions, compared to the standard American rice cooker.

When compared to cooking rice with an Instant pot, the general process is the same. After rinsing the rice, you’ll want to add the grains into the inner bowl, close the lid, and input the cooking time/select a cooking setting.

Differences between an Instant Pot and a Rice Cooker

When it comes to cooking rice, it doesn’t really matter whether or not you’re using an Instant Pot or a dedicated Rice Cooker. In the end, both appliances essentially do the same thing- use water to cook the rice grains. With that said, depending on the model of the rice cooker, some are capable of preparing other rice dishes with the press of a button such as congee.

To put it simply, the only difference between an Instant Pot and a Rice Cooker is the different features that the former includes. While the latter is designed solely to boil or steam rice, the multi-purpose cooker is exactly that- it is designed to accomplish a number of features, from cooking rice, to making yogurt, to sauteing food.

Functions that an Instant Pot has that a Rice Cooker does not:

– Due to its pressure cooking capabilities, an Instant Pot is able to cook a variety of foods up to 70% faster than traditional methods

– Most models, with the exception of the Lux, boasts a Yogurt function which can be easily used to prepare your own dairy treat at home

– Aside from rice, it is capable of preparing a variety of ingredients including meat, desserts, soup, cakes, pasta, etc.

– It can be used to cook food at a delayed time using its programmable start function

So Should I get an Instant Pot or a Rice Cooker?

Considering all that’s been discussed above, the decision is ultimately a question of preference. Will you be purchasing an Instant Pot solely for the purpose of cooking rice (aka, you will not be making use of any of its other functions)? Will you be using the multi-purpose cooker to prepare other dishes? Are you looking to invest in a 7-in-1 appliance that can easily do the work of other kitchen gadgets?

Another thing to consider is perhaps, the price. Generally speaking, Instant Pots sell anywhere from ~$80 to $150+ per unit. Considering its wide range of functions, this is a fairly reasonable investment. With that said, there are many affordable rice cookers that can be bought for under $20. If what you’re after is a cheap, affordable option for cooking rice, that may be a better option for you- this is especially true if you are not planning to use any of the Instant Pot’s other functions.

In addition to that, you also want to ask yourself- how much counter space do you have? If your kitchen is already filled with various gadgets, and you have no wish to replace them, perhaps just go with the rice cooker. On the other hand, if you’re looking to clear some space by purchasing a 7-in-1, the Instant Pot is the way to go.

Next, ask yourself- how much rice will you be cooking on a regular basis? How many will you be feeding? Will you simply be preparing a portion of rice for yourself? If that’s true, there may be no need for you to purchase an Instant Pot, which typically comes in two larger sizes- 6 quart and 8 quart. Instead, you may wish you purchase a miniature rice cooker that is capable of making ~3 cups of rice (these can easily be found for under $30).

Instant Pot vs Rice Cooker – The Bottom Line

Remember, both appliances essentially work the same way to cook rice. The big question then is, are you looking to just make rice? Or are you looking for a multi-purpose cooker that’s also capable of making rice? If you want a 7-in-1 gadget that’s capable of multiple functions, go for the Instant Pot. If not, perhaps getting a rice cooker is a better option. In the end, it’s all about preference and what you’re after.

A convenient way to cook and prepare meals, the Instant Pot has exploded in popularity over the past couple of years. Capable of performing an array of functions- from sautéing to making yogurt, the 7-in-1 cooker has replaced various kitchen gadgets for many people all around the world. Available for purchase at a number of retailers, a variety of models are available including the Duo, Lux, and Smart.

Like most things in the kitchen, however, there comes a time where it needs to be washed. What’s the proper way to wash the Instant Pot? What are the secrets to keeping it clean? Before we dive into the cleaning instructions, it’s important to note that the cooker consists of a number of different parts (e.g. sealing ring, inner pot, outside pot, steaming rack, etc). Depending on the part, the method of cleaning can vary.

In this particular article, we’ll be focusing on how to clean and wash the lid. An essential piece of the Instant Pot, it’s responsible for sealing the pot during the cooking process. Not just that, but it prevents debris and the like from falling into your prepared food.

How do I Clean the Lid of the Instant Pot?

For those of you who aren’t fond of hand washing, rejoice- for the lid is dishwasher safe (given that it’s placed on the top-rack). Before placing it there, however, it’s recommended to remove both the anti-block shield and the sealing ring so that it can be thoroughly cleaned.

To prevent the lid from retaining doors, it’s best to set it upside down (i.e. on the pot), prior to use or until it’s completely dried.

Prior to cleaning the lid, it’s also advisable to double check whether or not that’s any debris or food in the float and steam release valves. If this happens, it can prevent the Instant Pot from achieving the necessary pressure for cooking.

How do I Clean the Sealing Ring of the Lid?

The sealing ring is normally tucked inside the lid. When it’s time to clean it, you can either place it in the dishwasher or hand wash it with soapy water.

Tip: Before inserting the sealing ring back into the lid, you want to make sure that it has dried thoroughly

Tip #2: Check to make sure that the sealing ring is put securely back in place before you start to use the cooker

As you can probably guess, the sealing ring plays an essential role in the functioning of the Instant Pot. If you notice any cracking or damage, it may be time to purchase a replacement.

Tip: Using non-genuine Instant Pot sealing rings may void your cooker’s warranty

How do I Clean the Anti-Block Shield?

Similar to the sealing ring, it’s recommended that you clean the anti-block shield after each use. To remove it from the lid, you want to push on the side of the shield using your thumb, and lift up.

Instead of placing it in the dishwasher, wash the soap with warm, soapy water. Afterward, wipe dry with a soft cloth.

How do I Wash the Tempered Glass Instant Pot Lid?

Some people prefer using a tempered glass lid for the Instant Pot (purchased separately). Available in three sizes (i.e. 3 qt, 6 qt, 8 qt), its transparent glass allows for clear viewing of the food- making it perfect for sautéing and slow cooking.

As easy to clean as it is to use, simply pop it into the dishwasher. Alternatively, it can also be cleaned by hand using soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth after rinsing with water.

If you’re into making your own food then chances are, you’ve heard of the Instant Pot. Designed with convenience in mind, it boasts a number of different functions, all of which can be used to prepare different types of ingredients; not only is it capable of functioning as a pressure cooker, but it can also steam, sauté, make yogurt, and more. A handy 7-in-1, it is extremely efficient at preparing foods- despite the fact that it uses less energy, it is able to cook ingredients approximately 70% faster than traditional methods. Taking all of that into consideration, it’s no wonder why its popularity has surged in the past couple of years.

The History of the Instant Pot

Founded in 2009, the Instant Pot Company was put together by a team of Canadians, who were interested in exploring different methods of food preparation. Ultimately, they had one goal- to find a way to allow busy families to prepare quality food in less time.

Over the next eighteen months, they busied themselves with research, and development. Finally in late 2010, they introduced the first Instant Pot Programmable Cooker. Complete with a technologically advanced micro professor, it incorporated the functions of five different kitchen appliances into one; these include the warmer, steamer, slow cooker, pressure cooker, and rice cookers.

Incredibly successful, the team has since continued to develop different versions of the original model, to meet the growing needs of their audience.

The Different Models of the Instant Pot

Currently, there are three main models for the Instant Pot- the Duo, Lux, and Smart. We’ve laid out some of their differences below:

The Duo: The most popular, as it contains all 7 functions (Rice Cooker, Food Warmer, Slow Cooker, Pressure Cooker, Saute, Yogurt Maker, Steamer)

The Lux: Exactly the same as The Duo, except for the fact that it is incapable of making yogurt

The Smart: Exactly the same as the Duo, with additional “smart” capabilities such as bluetooth connectivity

In addition to those three, there are also a few newer models such as the Ultra, which features an entirely new interface, with a “custom mode.” Adding to that, there’s also the Duo Plus, which is a “newer version” of their most popular model, the Duo. Compared to the regular Duo, the Plus boasts a “sterilize” function.

What is a Pressure Cooker?

Now that we know what an Instant Pot is, let’s go over what a power cooker is. Essentially, it’s an electric pressure cooker. That is, it uses different pressure settings to cook homemade meals in a fraction of time, compared to stovetop cooking. Speaking of which, most pressure cookers come with two different pressure settings- high and low (some models may even have a medium setting). Depending on the type of food that you’ll be preparing, you’ll want to select the the proper option.

Invented in the 1600’s, the pressure cooker was originally put together by Denis Papin, a Frenchman who was interested in applying new discoveries about steam and pressure into cooking. The way that it worked was simple; it relied on steam pressure. That is, when a sealed pot contains a large amount of steam inside, high pressure will be built up, which can then be used to hasten the rate of cooking.

The Power Pressure Cooker

The Power Pressure Cooker is a popular brand of electric pressure cookers. Available in two sizes- 6 quart and 8 quart, it is capable of preparing a number of different ingredients from frozen foods to eggs. For more information, you can visit their official website at http://www.powerpressurecooker.com/.

How Does a Power Cooker Work?

Today, all pressure cookers come with a valve, that can be used to control the inner pressure. Thus, by changing the valve, one is able to control the pressure, for proper cooking of the inside ingredients.

Ultimately, high pressure has two main effects on cooking:

1.) The way it works, the higher the pressure in the pot, the more liquid is forced into the food. As this happens, the cooking process occurs quicker; in some particular foods, such as meat, the extra moisture from the liquid can also be tenderizing.

2.) With higher pressure, the boiling point of the water is also increased. Normally, when we’re cooking, water boils at a temperature of 212F. When the inner pressure is high however, this can go up to 250F. The higher the boiling point, the faster the food will cook.

What Can You Make with a Power Cooker?

The wonderful thing about pressure cooking is that it is extremely versatile. With a power cooker, you can pretty much cook anything in less than an hour. Some popular food items include roasts, braised meats, eggs, and stews.

What’s the Difference Between an Instant Pot and a Power Cooker?

As mentioned earlier on this page, the Instant Pot is a multi-purpose cooker; that is, it boasts a variety of different functions. When we consider that, it’s easy to see how the Instant Pot compares to a power cooker- that is, functioning as a power cooker is one of its many functions. Remember, the 7-in-1 appliance is essentially a pressure cooker, with many additional added functions.

Naturally, they are also two different brands. While the Instant Pot is designed to be a multi-purpose electric cooker, the Power Cooker is designed specifically for the purpose of pressure cooking.

Should I Buy an Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker?

Should you purchase an Instant Pot or a Pressure Cooker? In the end, this depends on what you’re trying to make. As we’ve explained previously, the former is designed to be a multi-purpose 7-in-1, while the latter is strictly capable of pressure cooking. If you’re on the fence about the two products, think of it this way- will you be using the many other functions that the Instant Pot has to offer? If not, you can probably just go with a pressure cooker. If, however, you want a variety of different functions at your disposal, the Instant Pot is a safe bet.

A few questions to ask yourself when deciding on an Instant Pot/Pressure Cooker:

– Am I interested solely in pressure cooking?

– Do I want to replace some of my existing kitchen appliances with an all-in-on product? (A good option if you’re looking to clear some counter space)

– Am I interested in making yogurt? (The Instant Pot has the function to make yogurt)

In the end, it all boils down to preference. Either way, both the Instant Pot and the Power/Pressure Cooker are extremely convenient to have in the kitchen. Who wouldn’t want to prepare delicious, healthy food in a short amount of time? If you’re worried about safety, don’t be- both cookers come complete with multiple safety functions.

If you’re into cooking, then you’ve probably heard of the new craze that is the Instant Pot. Marketed as a 7-in-1 kitchen appliance, it has gained a tremendous amount of popularity over the past couple of years. If anything, more and more home cooks have chosen to rely on the cooker in the kitchen- and for good reason.

A programmable cooker, the Instant Pot is capable of performing a number of functions from steaming to sautéing. Designed to prepare food up to 70% faster than traditional methods, it’s the perfect kitchen appliance for those who’d like to eat healthy, despite having a busy lifestyle. Equipped with smart technology, it’s even able to monitor pressure, adjust heating intensity, all to your desired results- automatically every time.

If you’re considering on purchasing the Instant Pot, then you’ve probably noticed that there are many varieties available. While different models feature different functions however, the general gist is the same. Considering that then, the main difference, when it comes to different Instant Pots, is the size. Like most consumer products, more than one size is available- determining on your personal needs. On this page, we’ll be going over some things to consider for the different sizes available. Hopefully, by the end of it, you’ll be able to determine which size Instant Pot to purchase, should you decide to go for the cooker.

Things to Keep in Mind About the Size

Before we delve into talk about the different sizes, there are some things that are important to remember. For instance, even if a pot is advertised to be able to hold certain volume, the entire volume cannot be used; it’s simply not practical to fill it all the way to the top. Considering its design, you’ll have to leave room for things such as boiling, stirring, and expansion, anyway. If you’re planning on steaming foods, don’t forget that the steam rack also tends to take up a large amount of space inside the inner pot.

In fact, to help you with this, the Instant Pot even has a max fill line, which approximately leads it to be 3/4 full.

What are the Available Sizes for the Instant Cooker?

Generally speaking, there are two size options for the Instant Pot- the 6 qt and 8 qt. While other brands of electric pressure cookers may come in smaller sizes, those two sizes are the most typical. With that said, some Instant Pot models are 3 qt.

To make it easier to visualize, a 6 qt pot can be used to hold 24 cups of liquid, while an 8 qt pot is equal can be used to hold 32 cups. One way or the other, both sizes are in no way small; if you’re looking for something more miniature, you may wish to look at other options. If however, you’re looking for something capable of preparing food for 4-6 people, this is it.

Choosing the Right Instant Pot Size – What Will You Be Cooking?

Aside from taking into consideration how many people you’ll be feeding, it also helps to consider what you’ll be cooking. What will you be preparing with the Instant Pot? Will you be able to fit the ingredients inside?

To give you a better idea, we’ll be listing some of the things that you can make with a 6 qt Instant pot, these include:

a 5 to 6 pound whole chicken

4 pounds of mashed potatoes

4 to 5 quarts of yogurt

What Instant Pot Model Should I Get?

But size isn’t the entire picture- what about functions? Currently, there are three models of the Instant Pot- the Lux, Duo, and Smart cookers. Naturally, the different models are also available in different sizes, we’ve listed them down below:

Lux: Available in 5, 6, and 8 qt

Smart: Available only in 6 qt

Duo: Available in 3, 6, 8 qt

With that, you can see that the 3 qt is only available with the Duo model. If you’re looking for something small and miniature, that’s probably your best bet. If however, you’re more interested in the different functionalities, keep reading.

The Lux Instant Pot: Contains 6 functions (Food Warmer, Rice Cooker, Saute, Pressure cooker, Slow Cooker, and Steamer). Does not feature the yogurt function

The Duo Instant Pot: Contains 7 functions (Food Warmer, Rice Cooker, Saute, Pressure cooker, Slow Cooker, Steamer, Yogurt Maker)

The Smart Instant Pot: Contains the same 7 functions as The Duo, with the additional abilities to download recipes, choose from three temperature choices, connect to smart devices via bluetooth

How Many People Will You be Feeding with the Instant Pot?

When deciding on a size, another question to ask yourself is- how many people would you be feeding on a regular basis with the Instant Pot?

If you have a big family, that is, you’ll be cooking for more than four people, it’s typically advised to get the 8 qt model. With that said, if you often do batch cooking, even if you’re only feeding 1-2 people, the 8 qt is also recommended.

If you’ll be preparing food for 1 to 2 people, and you tend not to batch cook, then the 6 qt is recommended.

If you simply do not have the counter space for a 6 qt or 8qt cooker, you may wish to purchase the smaller, 3 qt, which is available only with the Duo model.

Another thing to consider is the pressurization time. Naturally, the larger the pot, the greater amount of time is required for the inside to come to pressure (having said that, it’s still relatively fast compared to traditional cooking methods).

What Size Instant Pot do I Need? – The Bottom Line

Summing up everything we’ve talked about above, there are a few questions to keep in mind when deciding upon a size. These are:

What will I be cooking with the Instant Pot? A few eggs? Or a few pounds of meat? For bigger ingredients, you’ll want to go with the 8 qt models

What functions will I be using? Will I need to cook my foods on a high or low temperature setting? Do I want to make yogurt? Remember, the Lux model is not capable of making yogurt

Will I be doing batch cooking? If so, you’ll want to make more food with the 8 qt

How many people will I be cooking for with the Instant Pot? Am I just preparing food for myself? Or four others?

Am I interested in having “smart” capabilities? That is, do I want to connect my Instant pot to my smart phone/tablet? If so, you’ll want to choose the Smart model, which is only available in the 6 qt size

How much counter space do I have? Do I have enough room to fit an 8 qt cooker in the kitchen? If space is an issue, you may wish to look into getting a smaller model, such as the 3 qt (which is only available with the Duo)

Designed to be a multi-purpose cooker, the Instant Pot is capable of multiple functions; not only can it be used as a saucepan, but it is also capable of cooking rice, and even making yogurt. Officially released in 2010, the small appliance significantly reduces the time needed for food preparation, by cooking 2 to 10 times faster than the traditional cooker. Highly versatile and convenient, it also uses up to 70% less energy compared to other cooking methods. If you’re interested in preparing healthy, yet easy-to-make dishes, the Instant Pot is designed for you.

Like most electronics, however, potential consumers are bound to have questions about the product. How does it work? Does it really perform as well as it’s advertised? How safe is it? On this page, we will be answering some of the most frequently asked questions about the Instant Pot. By doing this, hopefully, you will be able to have a better idea of how the small appliance works, and be able to determine whether or not it’s suited for your lifestyle. Without further ado, let’s move forward to the FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Instant Pot

How Safe is it to use Instant Pots?

Compared to other varieties of pressure cookers, the Instant Pot is a much safer alternative. Designed with safety in mind, it features multiple features including:

– A Pressure Regular: Helps to ensure that the cooking pressure is under the safety limit

– An Anti-Blockage Vent: Prevents food and debris from blocking the pot’s vent

– A Safety Lid Lock: Prevents the lid of the cooker from accidentally opening while it’s pressurized

– Automatic Temperature Control: The computer automatically regulates the temperature based on the cooking setting

– A Sensor for Lid Position: Determines whether or not the lid is currently in an unsafe position

In addition to all that, the Instant Pot is also capable of cutting off power if the international temperature is to exceed preset safety limits. With all that said, however, it, like other kitchen appliances, should also be used diligently.

Are Instant Pots and Pressure Cookers the Same Thing?

Yes, the Instant Pot is a type of electric pressure cooker. To clarify, there are two main varieties- stovetop and electric. While they’re both capable of “pressure cooking”, those of the electric variety tend to be able to do more. Complete with smart built-in programs, it can be programmed to complete an array of tasks.

One thing that’s also often overlooked is the fact that you can swap stainless liners with an Instant Pot.

Are Instant Pots and Crock Pots the Same Thing?

No, while the Instant Pot capable of performing multiple functions, the Crock Pot serves only as a slow cooker. In fact, the former also has a slow cooking setting that can be used.

If you’re solely wanting to slow cook foods, a Crock Pot may suffice. If, however, you’re interested in doing more with a small appliance, the Instant Pot is probably the way to go.

How do you Clean an Instant Pot?

Seeing as how the Instant Pot consists of multiple components, it should also be washed component by component.

To clean the exterior of the cooker, you can use a damp cloth; for the inside, you can also use a slightly damp cloth, though it’s crucial that the cooker be kept dry at all times. If cleaning is needed around the edges, an old toothbrush can be used. Never place the cooker in the dishwasher.

As far as the inner pot and steam rack goes, both items can be safely put in the dishwasher. For periodic cleanings, you may also choose to place one cup of white vinegar at the bottom; after letting it rest for five minutes, rinse well with water.

The lid of the Instant Pot is also dishwasher safe, though it’s recommended to remove the anti-block field and sealing ring for thorough cleansing. In order to prevent it from retaining doors, place the lid upside down on the put after it’s been washed.

The layer underneath the lid, the anti-block shield should be cleaned separately after each use. After washing it with warm, soapy water, simply rinse and dry with a cloth.

Last but not least, the sealing ring can either be placed in the dishwasher or washed by hand. Remember to allow it to dry completely before re-inserting it back into the lid.

How to Steam Foods in an Instant Pot

The Instant Pot works as an excellent steamer. In order to steam foods, you’ll want to place at least one cup of water into the bottom of the inner pot. Next, place the steamer basket inside- on it, you’ll want to place the ingredients that you’d like to steam. After you’ve done so, close the lid, and set to sealing. From there, you’ll want to input the cooking time after pressing the “Steam Button”.

Once the food is finished, be sure to manually release the pressure, before removing the items from the pot.

What Can an Instant Pot Do?

Marketed as a convenient, 7-in-1 kitchen appliance, the Instant Pot is designed to prepare and cook a number of different dishes. Not only is it able to steam food, but it can also be used to cook rice, make yogurt, warm food, saute items- all at an incredibly quick rate.

Are Instant Pots Safe?

As mentioned earlier, the Instant Pot consists of a number of different parts. While the cooker itself, should never be placed in the dishwasher, many components are dishwasher safe; these include the inner pot, steam rack, lid, and sealing ring.

Are Instant Pots Worth It?

Like most things, whether or not an Instant Pot is worth it depends on what you’re looking for in a cooker. For instance, are you simply interested in cooking rice (if so, using a rice cooker may be a better option)? Or are you wanting to do more, such as making yogurt, pressure cook or steam foods?

The wonderful thing about the 7-in-1 Instant Pot is that it is capable of performing numerous functions. If you’re interested in more than one of its functions, it’s probably worth it.

How do you Saute Items Using an Instant Pot?

The newest Instant Pots are equipped with an advanced sautéing function. To sauté items, simply place the ingredients in the inner pot, and press the “Sauté” function key. Unlike some of its other modes, the lid must remain open at all time, in order to prevent pressure from building up. There are three different temperature settings, Normal (320F), More (338F), and Less (221F).

How do you Make Yogurt Using an Instant Pot?

If you’ve looked at your Instant Pot, then you’ve probably noticed the “Yogurt” button- that’s right, you can make your own home-made yogurt using the cooker!

First things first, you’ll want to heat a good amount of milk (e.g. 1 gallon) in the pot. Simply pour the liquid inside, press the “Yogurt Button”, and select the “Boil” option using the “Adjust” button.

After the milk has been heated thoroughly (it can type up to an hour), double check using a food thermometer that the liquid has reached 180F.

Once you’ve confirmed the milk has reached 180F, you’ll want to cool it to 100F. To do so, simply remove the inner pot, and set it on a cooling rack.

Next, you can add your yogurt starter (e.g. plain yogurt with live/action cultures) into the mixture. Afterward, return the inner pot back into the cooker and press the “Yogurt” button again. Using the “Adjust” button, keep the yogurt at the right temperature for eight hours- this allows for the cultures to work its magic.

Why Does My Instant Pot Say Burn?

When the word, “Burn” is displayed on the Instant Pot, it means that something has burned at the bottom of the pot, due to insufficient amounts of water, that are necessary for pressurization. To fix this, you’ll want to open the pot and clean the scorched foods off of the bottom. Starting over, you’ll want to ensure an adequate amount of liquid has been added.

Why Won’t My Instant Pot Seal?

There are a few reasons why the lid of your Instant Pot may not be sealing correctly, this include:

– There are bits of food debris on the rim of the pot

– The sealing ring is not properly placed in the pot

– There is debris (typically from starchy foods) coming up through the valve

To fix these issues, you’ll either want to make sure that the sealing ring is properly seated before closing the lid, wipe off the inner pot’s rim, or purchase a new sealing ring.

What Type of Instant Pot Should I Get?

While there are many different models of the Instant Pot, they all essentially do the same thing. The one major difference is size. How much food will you be cooking? If you plan on cooking for 4-6 people, the 6 qt will probably suffice. If not, there’s the option of the 8 qt model. Likewise, there’s also a small, 3 qt model, if you’re looking to prepare small portions of food.

With that said, let’s go over some of the different series:

Lux: An older model, does not have yogurt making functionalities; does not offer low-pressure cooking

Duo: Capable of both pressurizing foods at high and low settings; capable of making yogurt

Ultra: Features greater temperature control, as well as app and Bluetooth connectivity

What Instant Pot Accessories Should I Get?

There are many accessories that you can purchase for your Instant Pot. For instance, you can purchase more than one sealing rings for different foods if you’re sensitive to smells (especially if you’ll be making sweet items), or steamer inserts if you’re fond of steaming foods.

Some other popular accessories include a steaming basket, a tempered glass lid for slow cooking, stackable pans, and the plastic lid.

Where is the Instant Pot made?

Currently, the Instant Pot is manufactured by the Midea Group, a well-known Chinese electrical appliance manufacturer, in Guangdong, China.

Can the Instant Pot Make Rice?

Yes, you can easily cook rice with an Instant Pot. To do so, simply add rinsed rice and water in a 1:1 ratio (only applies for white rice) into the inner pot. Next, you’ll want to press on the “Rice” button after locking the lid and setting the valve to “sealing.” Make sure it’s set to high pressure, and cook for five minutes.

Can the Instant Pot Make Bread?

In a way, yes. While you won’t be able to make traditional white bread, quick bread such as banana bread is possible. In fact, you can even use the Instant Pot to make a variety of cakes.

Can the Instant Pot be Used for Canning?

While canning is possible with the Instant Pot, it’s generally not recommended as it does not reach the necessary pressure that most stove top pressure cookers are capable of for canning.

Can you Deep Fry Using the Instant Pot?

Generally, you will not be able to deep fry using an Instant Pot as its highest temperature, 284F, is not high enough for deep frying. If you desire to deep fry various foods, it may be a better option to use a dedicated deep fryer.

Can the Instant Pot Cook Eggs?

Yes, you can easily make soft/hard boiled eggs with the Instant Pot, using the “Steam” setting. To do this, place the steamer rack inside the pot, with one cup of cold water. Next, gently place the eggs on the rack. From there, close the lid, select the pressure setting, and cook anywhere from 5 to 14 minutes, depending on your preference. After the eggs are finished cooking, you’ll want to place them in a cold water bath to prevent further cooking (as they are still hot).

Can the Instant Pot Boil Water?

Yes, you can boil or heat up water using an Instant Pot. When adding the liquid, however, you want to be sure that you don’t fill it “too high” as you don’t want it to go down into the floor of the outer pot.

Can the Instant Pot Cook Frozen Meat?

Yes, you can easily cook frozen food using an Instant Pot, including meat. With that said, it’s important to note that raw meat should not be left at room temperature for over two hours. Typically, it’s advised to pre-cook meat, before using the “Keep Warm” setting to maintain it at the proper temperature.

Can the Instant Pot go on the Stove?

Assuming that you’re using the Instant Pot for its intended purposes, there shouldn’t be a reason to use it on a stovetop. If anything, you can cook the ingredients using the cooker itself.

Can the Instant Pot go in the Oven?

Similar to the above situation, there shouldn’t be a reason for putting the Instant Put in the oven. With that said, the inner pot could be removed, and placed in the oven as it is made of stainless steel.

Will the Instant Pot Beep When the Food is Done?

Yes, once the food is complete, the Instant Pot will alert you by beeping. If you want to turn off the beeping, however, that is also possible by turning off the sound in settings.

Cooking the perfect rice can be tricky. Surely, we’ve all wondered the same thing- what’s the trick to getting it soft and fluffy? If you’ve ever struggled with cooking the perfect rice, then you’re probably familiar with the taste of overly wet or dry grains. While you might be able to perfect it over time with trial and error, wouldn’t it be nice to know some tips? Sure, you can buy an electric rice cooker, a specially designed appliance to boil or steam rice, and let it do all the work but what if you don’t have the counter space in your kitchen for such an item? Or if you simply do not want to invest in another product? When the craving for rice hits, what’s the fastest, yet easiest way to cook rice to perfection?

Enter the Instant Pot. A combination of an electronically controlled slow cooker and pressure cooker, the 7-in-1 kitchen appliance is designed to make preparing food easy- of course, rice is no exception. Though it was released in 2010, the idea of such a multi-purpose cooker has been around since the mid 2000’s. Aside from cooking rice, it’s also capable of steaming food, making yogurt, warming food, and more. If anything, it’s an essential piece of equipment for those who like quick and easy-to-make food!

Before we delve into the art that is rice cooking, let’s go over some basics. First things first- the water to rice ratio is incredibly important to making the perfect white rice. While it may be hard to remember at the beginning, you’ll quickly master it after making it a couple of times. If you’ve ever cooked rice on the stovetop, you’ll quickly realize that the water to rice ratio is different. In fact, if you’re almost guaranteed to end up with subpar rice, should you follow the same ratio.

With all that said, the ratio that you want to follow for al dente aka “firm” rice is 1:1; that is, the same amount of rice and water (assuming that you’re cooking long-grain white rice such as Jasmine or Basmati rice). Should you like your rice a little softer, however, you can add up to 1/2 cup of additional water. As far as brown rice goes (remember, brown rice contains much more nutrients as it is whole grain), typically, you can use a similar ratio to the one we’ve mentioned above.

How to Cook Rice in an Instant Pot – Instructions

Preparations

Before you put the rice into your Instant Pot, there’s a couple of things that you should do first. After measuring the amount needed into a bowl, you’ll want to rinse it with water using a strainer. Not only will this step help to remove any debris that may be in the grains, but it’ll also remove excess surface starch (too much of that can cause the rice to clump together or become “gummy”).

After rinsing the rice, you can add some add a pinch of salt for some additional flavor. Alternatively, you can also add a tablespoon or so of unsalted butter (on the Sauce setting), which can also help to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom.

Full Instructions

1.) Measure out a portion of dry rice, and set it aside (remember to store the rest of the uncooked rice (either in a sealed, airtight container or in its original bag) in a cool, and dry area to prolong shelf life)

2.) Measure out the same amount of water (e.g. if you measured out one of rice in the above step, you’ll want to measure out one cup of water). Remember, the water to rice ratio is crucial in cooking the perfect rice!

3.) Carefully pour the water into the Instant Pot

4.) Take the dry rice that you’ve measured out in step one, and rinse it with water accordingly (as mentioned previously) to remove excess starch and debris from the surface

5.) After rinsing the rice, you can add it to the Instant Pot, which should already contain the measured water

6.) Securely lock on the lid on the Instant Pot, ensuring that the steam valve is in the “Sealing” position

7.) Next, you’ll want to input the time- aka, how long you want the Instant Pot to cook the rice for. For maximal precision, it’s recommended to use the “Manual” setting as opposed to the “Rice” setting as the latter is for parboiled or white rice only

8.) In order to adjust the cooking time on the “Manual” setting, press the “-“ button. Typically, you’ll want to cook the rice anywhere from 21 to 23 minutes (of course, depending on your preference)

9.) Relax and chill for the next ~25 minutes as the rice cooks in the Instant Pot

10.) Once the rice is fully cooked, it’s recommended to let it sit for approximately 10 minutes (though you may bypass this step if you’re hungry)

11.) Open the lid to see perfectly cooked rice

How to Cook Rice in an Instant Pot – FAQ’s

Why does the Instant Pot require less water than a Rice Cooker?

If you’ve ever cooked rice using the rice cooker, you’ll know that it tends to require more water than what you need with the Instant Pot. Why is less water required for the same quality of rice?

The answer is simple- the way the cooker is designed (mainly its superior sealing ability), it allows for minimal water evaporation. In contrast to this, rice cookers tend to have a much greater water evaporation; thus, more water is necessary

Why is there water left over in the pot after the rice is cooked?

You’re probably using too much water- remember to follow the 1:1 ratio. Another tip- don’t forget to drain out the excess water after rinsing your rise as it can tip the ratio off.

Is the Instant Pot predominantly used as a rice cooker?

While many people use it to cook rice with a high rate of success, the Instant Pot is not limited to cooking rice.

Why is my cooked rice sticky?

If your cooked rice is sticky, you may need to give it more time to rest and cool before serving (i.e. allow it to cool off with the lid off for at least five minutes). The reason for this is that white rice tends to get sticky above 155 Fahrenheit (68 Celsius).

Why is my rice only half cooked?

There are many possible reasons for this. For instance, the rice that you’re cooking may require more time that was inputted. If your rice is old, it may also require a little bit of extra water. Depending on the reason, it may take a little troubleshooting to perfect.

When do I use the “Rice” button?

The “Rice” button on the Instant Pot is intended for cooking white rice (e.g. basmati, jasmine, etc.). If you’re making brown rice, you’ll have to use the “Manual” mode (of course, you can also make white rice on the “Manual” setting).

So is an Instant Pot better than a Rice Cooker?

That depends. What will you be using the Instant Pot for? If your only aim is to cook rice, and nothing else, a standard Rice Cooker may suffice. If however, you’re interested in cooking other things (anything from meatballs to veggies), an Instant Pot may be a better choice. After all, it’s designed to do more than just cooking rice.

100% natural, eggs are one of nature’s most nutrient-dense foods. With 6 grams of protein per egg with zero sugar and carbs, they really are one of the world’s most perfect foods. In addition to being nutritious, they also have impressive health credentials. Not only do they contain all nine essential amino acids (which are necessary for the body), but they also contain 13 essential vitamins and minerals. Considering all that, it’s easy to see why eggs should be included in every balanced diet.

Of course, there are many different ways to cook an egg- scrambled, sunny side up, over easy, poached, etc. When it comes to that, it just boils down to is personal preference; do you prefer runny yolks? Hard egg whites? Or the two mixed together in a scrambled dish? While all of those options can be mighty delicious, today we will be focusing on the simple, easy-to-make, hard boiled egg.

A hard-boiled egg is exactly what it sounds like- an egg that has been boiled gently until both the yolk and the white have solidified (with the shell still intact). Incredibly versatile, they’re great whether they’re eaten alone, in sandwiches, or chopped up and included in salads. In fact, they’re also the foundation for another yummy dish- devised eggs (stuffed hard-boiled eggs).

Like most dishes, however, perfecting hard-boiled eggs can take a few tries. If you’ve ever tried making them, then you’re probably run into one or more of the following:

The shell sticks to the egg and is incredibly hard to peel

The hard-boiled egg is watery

The hard-boiled egg is rubbery

If so, don’t worry- these are all easy fixes! While hard-boiled eggs can be cooked in just a pot, we will be talking about how to cook them in an Instant Pot in this article.

First things first- Choosing Healthy Eggs

As you probably already know, there are many options when it comes to buying eggs. Organic? Free-run? Free-range? These points should all be taken into consideration the next time you’re shopping for this protein-packed staple at the supermarket.

Organic: The eggs are produced through organic means. In other words, the poultry that laid them were fed a 100% organic feed. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, hens that lay organic eggs must also have access to the outdoors (i.e. not raised in cages).

Free Run: The eggs are produced by hens that are able to run free in an indoor barn (i.e. not housed in cages).

Free Range: The eggs are produced by hens that are not only able to roam indoor, but are also permitted outdoors, as they please. In other words, they’re able to go outside, where they’re able to peck, forage, and nibble on bugs.

If healthy, delicious eggs are what you are after, you’ll want to purchase, organic, free-range eggs. As with most organic, healthy foods, however, the price will also be higher than what you’re used to paying for regular eggs. In the end, however, it’s all worth it. Not only are eggs from free-range hens typically more delicious, but you’ll also be supporting better practices. Remember, happy hens- that is, free range-hens, are able to roam freely and bask in the sunlight as they please.

What is a Good Egg?

Still, it’s inevitable that eggs can go bad over time. So, how do you know if a carton of eggs has passed their expiry date in the fridge? Though it’s generally safe to eat “expired” eggs (some brands may have an expiration date stamped on the shell), it’s probably best to run a quick test to see if they’re still fresh.

The Egg Test, as I like to call it, only takes a few seconds. First, you’ll want to fetch a bowl and fill it with cold water. Next, place the egg in question inside. If it ends up sinking to the bottom, it’s still fresh and good to eat; if it sinks all the way to the bottom but stands on its “point”, you should probably eat it soon. On the flip side of things, if the egg ends up floating on the top, you’ll want to discard it.

How does this work? This test mainly relies on the fact that egg shells have tiny pores. As such, the liquid inside an egg is able to evaporate away over a period of time, and is instead, replaced by air- this would make “old eggs” float to the top of the bowl.

How Long Are Eggs Good For?

Generally, eggs stay fresh anywhere from four to five weeks after they’ve been packed. According to the Department of Agriculture, all brands of branded eggs are also required to have a pack date visible on the carton.

How to Keep Your Eggs Fresh for Longer

Storage is incredibly important when it comes to keeping eggs fresh. Obviously, you’ll want to tuck them away in the main part of the fridge, where the temperature is generally more stable, and colder. While many refrigerators nowadays have egg compartments on the door, it’s typically not a good idea to store them there as the temperature tends to fluctuate way too much.

How To Cook Hard Boiled Eggs in an Instant Pot

If you own an Instant Pot, then you should already be familiar with its variety of functions. Not only is it able to cook things such as rice and stew, but it’s also capable of making the perfect hard-boiled egg. In fact, it’s incredibly easy! No more fiddling with pots, and hot water- just let the Instant Pot do everything for you! Extremely no fuss, you’ll get perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs in about five minutes.

Ingredients:

– Eggs (as many as you’d like to cook/fits in the steam rack)

– 1 Cup of Water

Instructions:

1.) Seeing as how we’re making hard-boiled eggs, you’ll want to fill your Instant Pot with water (approx. 1 cup)

2.) Next, you’ll want to place a steam rack (which is included with the pot) inside, on the bottom

3.) After that, place the eggs gently on the rack; make sure they’re nice and secure

4.) Close the lid of the Instant Pot, and set the toggle to “Sealing”

5.) Press the “Manual” button and set the cooking time to 5 minutes on the Instant Pot. This will use high pressure to cook the eggs

* Depending on how you like your hard-boiled eggs, you can play around with the cooking time. For instance, if you prefer very, firm eggs, you can cook it for an additional 1-2 minutes. Still, 5 minutes tends to be the sweet spot for the perfectly cooked egg.

6.) While the eggs are cooking, prepare a medium-sized bowl with cold water

7.) After the eggs are cooked, allow the steam to release completely from the Instant Pot before opening the lid

8.) Carefully, transfer each egg to the ice water bath that you’ve prepared previously. Allow them to sit for a few minutes until cool

* This step is extremely important. If skipped, the eggs can continue to overcook outside of the pot as they’re still hot. Placing the eggs in the water can also help to make them easier to peel once they’ve cooled.

9.) Eat the delicious hard-boiled eggs that you’ve just made

How To Cook Hard Boiled Eggs in an Instant Pot – FAQ’S

Why is it so hard to peel the shell off of my hard-boiled eggs?

As it turns out, the fresher the egg, the harder it will be to remove the shell once it’s been hard-boiled. The way it is, egg white tends to stick to the shell of a fresh egg. For easier peeling, you’ll want to place the eggs in a cold or ice-water bath after cooking.

Why is the yolk of my hard-boiled egg green/gray?

A hard-boiled egg with a greenish, grayish yolk is overcooked. If this happens, you’ll want to decrease the cooking time. Fortunately for us, overcooking is not generally an issue when using the Instant Pot.

Why is the yolk of my hard-boiled egg still gooey?

If the yolk of your hard-boiled egg is still “soft”, you’ve most likely made soft, or medium-boiled eggs. While they’re tasty on their own, you simply have to cook it for a bit longer for the ideal results.
